Smoky Conversations: Flavorful Thoughts to Ponder “The Transfer Portal: When It’s Time to Switch Teams”

Sometimes loyalty keeps us stuck. In life, as in sports, players outgrow their teams. What once fit perfectly may start to feel tight, restrictive, or outdated. And when that happens, it’s not betrayal—it’s evolution.
Whether it’s changing careers, relationships, or mindsets, remember: even champions get traded. It’s not about who you leave—it’s about where you’re headed and how you grow once you get there.
Recently, I was laid off due to a company restructure. One day I was suited up, running plays I’d mastered; the next, I was standing on the sidelines, staring at an open field with no clear team to run with. It forced me to reevaluate and elevate—from employee to entrepreneur.
That transition felt like walking into a brand-new locker room.
You wonder: Will I fit in? Will the existing players accept me? Will this culture be right for my growth?
It’s a cocktail of fear, excitement, and pressure—the kind that makes your hands shake before the first snap. But fear can be fuel. Sometimes discomfort is the strength coach that pushes you into your next level of performance.
Just like in sports, there comes a time when you’ve outgrown the playbook you’ve been using. You can stay loyal to an old system that no longer fits, or you can trust your instincts, tighten your laces, and join a new team—the one you were meant to lead.
The truth is, sometimes the trade isn’t punishment—it’s promotion. The shift you didn’t plan for may be the opportunity that forces you to become who you were always meant to be.
So as the smoke curls through the lounge today, raise a glass for those in their own “transfer portal”—people walking away from comfort and into calling. The field may be unfamiliar, but the game is still yours to win.
Sometimes the best plays start with a trade.
Until next smoke… stay grounded, stay lit, stay smoky, and stay fit!
